Squad goals! Neil Patrick Harris may be a famous actor, but his family is known for sporting the best Halloween costumes.
The Series of Unfortunate Events alum married David Burtka in September 2014 in Italy, four years after they welcomed their twins, Harper and Gideon. The couple began dressing the siblings in costumes early on, from Alice in Wonderland outfits in 2013 to Batman characters the following year.
The actor exclusively told Us Weekly in September 2021 that he couldn’t “hint” at their upcoming costumes due to how busy their lives had become.
“I’m trying to find time to take the picture,” the New Mexico native joked at the time. “I have an interesting idea, but we’re all pretty busy and the kids are in school right now. So hopefully it’ll work out. I don’t know. It seems like we’re trying to best ourselves in the weird competition of no one. So I don’t need to win any awards.”
The How I Met Your Mother alum joked that he hoped Harper and Gideon were “still on board” with the tradition, saying, “There’s a lot of barter at the moment.”
Harris went on to tell Us that his children understand his fame and even like to watch some of his shows.
“Harper’s on a Doogie Howser [M.D.] kick,” the Broadway star said at the time. “So she’s, like, watching early episodes of me in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, which is adorable and odd. It’s cute. It’s funny. I think she uses it as an opportunity to sort of mock [me] and be able to think it’s silly.”
The Tony winner added that the twins like his “bad dad jokes” but do get “annoyed” with his love of magic tricks.
“Anything that I like, they roll their eyes at, but they know how a lot of magic is done,” Harris explained. “They’ve been sort of behind the curtain a little bit.”
In October 2019, the Emmy nominee told Us that his and Burtka’s children “see a ton of stuff” living in New York City.
“They’re exposed to stuff at a young age,” the comedian exclusively said at the time. “I think they grow from that. I think when you’re living in a house in the Valley or Beverly Hills you don’t get to see that much, whereas here you, get to see and experience so much. I think we’re really fortunate to be in New York.”
